On Being a Girl in a Band

Why do I take such offense in bands who have a lead singer who doesn’t play an instrument? And why is that offense so much greater when the lead singer is female, and the only girl in the band? Is that ingrained sexism? Or is it the perpetuation of the way-too-played out stereotype, that the only thing a girl is good for in a band is singing and being a sex symbol? Is this my own frustration as a girl in a band? Is this insecurity of my own sexual desireability and show-woman-ship?

I feel like I dealt with this stereotype more when I was the only girl in the band. When I was often asked if I was the lead singer and it was assumed that Rob was the only set of brains in the music and lyrics. Now that our drummer is also female, we’re assumed on arrival to be bucking a trend. It’s not that the stereotype of girl-in-band was ever malicious, but it’s nice to not have to deal with it personally right now..
