“Trust Women.” —

~Dr. George Tiller. Three years ago today Dr. Tiller, an abortion provider in Wichita, Kansas, was murdered. Today we remember his courageous and compassionate work as both a health care provider and a women’s health advocate. Our thoughts are with Dr. Tiller’s family and loved ones.

Life has been crazy lately. First I was putting all my spare time into applying and interviewing for a promotion (and work has been crazy in general). Then the Seattle International Film Festival started up and I began seeing movies every spare moment I had. Then I took a 4-day road trip over the Memorial Day Weekend. And every other free second I end up having, I fill with cooking because it’s what’s been making me really happy.I typically queue up posts in the evenings to post the next day, but there just hasn’t been the time. I hope to get back here soon and recap my vacation, some recipes and post general stuff like great articles. ex;oh;

Why would I pay for a professional massage when I have two perfectly aggressive cats at home?

And they’ll even cuddle afterward.

I made something WONDERFUL on Sunday night. And it was so simple.
The back story: If you’ve ever been to Pike Place Market you’ll know what I mean when I refer to the produce vendor with the aggressive fruit samplers — where pieces of apple and pear are shoved in your face and you are heckled until you take the slice (in the nicest way, of course).
Well, this last weekend they drew me in and I ended up exchanging $25 for a large box of fresh fruits and veggies, including some ripe white nectarines.
Nectarines have to be my very, very favorite stone fruit. I don’t know if I even ate a nectarine before 2008, but that summer I was in Switzerland and the grocery stores were filled with them. I basically lived on Nectarines and have never gone back.
Another great market find: Quintessential Gourmet, a brand new olive oil and balsamic vinegar store. I walked out of there with three amazing vinegars: Tangerine, Blackberry Ginger, and Tahitian Vanilla. Their small bottles are only $5 a pop and you can sample every single offering in the store. I’m telling you — next time you’re at Pike Place, pop in there.
Ok, ok, on to the recipe, which is super simple (if fairly inexact):
Cut a few nectarines in half and finagle the pits out
Whisk together about a 1/4 cup of Vanilla Balsamic (or a good quality balsamic & a teaspoon of vanilla extract) with a couple tablespoons of honey
Heat up the grill or a sauté pan to medium
If using a pan, melt half a tablespoon of butter
Brush some of the honey balsamic mixture on the nectarines and place them cut side down in the pan (this is also when I added some leftover blueberries I had)
Sauté or grill until fragrant and slightly browned, then turn them over and cook for a bit longer on the rounded side
Take out of pan and plate. Then drizzle the remaining honey balsamic mixture over the fruit
Enjoy!
So easy — only 10 minutes to a delicious, homemade dessert.

I have been cooking a lot lately (again).

And reminding myself how much joy it brings me. How did I ever get in a situation where I stopped cooking all the time? Even simple things, like the grilled cheese I made tonight, make me happy.

From Me To You: Desert Oasis -

fromme-toyou:

Throwing on our souk purchased packs, Kelly and I ventured out of the ancient walls of Marrakech onward to the Agafay desert at the base of the Atlas Mountains. It is quite a strange sensation feeling the heat of the desert sun on your skin while looking out onto snow capped mountains…

Day…

This entire photoset is wayyyyyy too colonial to leave a good taste in my mouth. Kind of done with the From Me, To You blog… too much of this kind of NY white elite stuff for my taste. The unfollow has been a long time coming.

Around Town #4: Rachel’s Ginger Beer
Locally-brewed, handcrafted ginger beer — there ain’t no better GB in this city. Rachel use to rent Lark’s kitchen and sell at the Broadway Farmer’s Market, but now she has this storefront (opening soon), right next to the bar she recently purchased, Montana, which has her ginger beer on tap (as well as Moscow Mules & Whiskey Sours on tap as well!)
Can’t wait to fill a growler here when this place opens up.

Around Town, #3: The Fat Hen
Currently my favorite place for breakfast. It’s tiny and tucked away in somewhat of a hidden, residential part of Ballard. They have a menu full of baked eggs, plus a delicious benedict and some divine lunch options too.
